Tassels and pom poms and fringe, oh my!

6/28/2017

Tassels, pom poms, and fringe are a big fashion trend ... as earrings, on necklaces, on hems of shirts, skirts, pants – and especially on our favorite accessory (you guessed it), scarves!

See what a difference pom poms, fringe, and tassels make on these sweet items available from our good friends at OBVI Boutique?

What’s great about this trend is that it’s not necessarily going to break the bank to stay in style. It doesn’t take much to give your outfit a bouncing personality. With earrings or necklaces, you can find jewelry at any price point. Plus, for those of us who are creative-minded, tassels and pom poms are pretty much the easiest things ever to make or attach yourself.
To make tassels:
All you need is a packet of embroidery floss (in  your favorite color) and a pair of scissors. And possibly up to three minutes of time per tassel.
  • Remove the wrapper from your embroidery floss.
  • Carefully cut 2 12 inch pieces of floss from the bundle.
  • Tie one piece of string around the middle of the floss bundle and knot it tightly.  (Keep the ends long. You can use them to tie your tassels onto an item or as a thread to sew them onto an edge.)
  • Fold the floss in half.
  • Tie the second piece of string about ¼ of an inch down from the top, and knot it tightly. (You can trim the end to match the length of the fringe once you’ve made it in the next step.)
  • Make the fringe with scissors: just cut a straight line across the bottom loops.
And that’s it. It probably took longer to type the instructions than it’ll take to make them.

To add pom poms, it’s even easier.  Seriously:
Pom poms are available in yards of trim, already attached to each other and ready for action.
  • Just purchase fabric glue and pom pom trim at your local fabric store.
  • With a little patience waiting for the glue to dry, you can quickly and easily pom-pom out your tee shirt, purse, a cuff bracelet or beach bag …
If you can glue it, there’s practically nothing that can’t be improved (or made happier) with some pom poms! (Of course, pom pom trim can also be attached with hand-stitching, with iron-on tape or by using the zipper foot attachment on your sewing machine.)

Because they’re so popular,  we Surprise Style Fashionistas have made sure that our scarf subscriptions (such as $48 for 3 months of surprise scarves) include at least one scarf with fringe benefits.

Let us know if you give either tassel-making or pom pom-trimming a whirl. We’d love to see the results.

The 80s are back! (Again.)

Just in case you feel that the springtime trend of florals and muted colors such as rose is a little déjà vu, don't worry, you're not losing it.  Many of us have lived through (or enjoyed TV reruns of ) the 80s, and sure enough, some of those beloved styles and colors are back. But it's turning out to be more than just florals.

Jeans waists are getting higher -- higher, we tell you (who would have thought?) as are shorty-shorts, especially cutoffs. (Just in case we're being too clever, we mean the length of the shorty-shorts is getting shorter/higher. Get it? We're so funny. It is probably because the circulation is being cut off from our brains by our jeans high waistbands. Okay, we'll stop now.)

Along with their jeans, people with the highest fashion IQ around are wearing bodysuits. Bodysuits give you a nice, smooth, clean silhouette and this retro look has the added bonus of not coming untucked.

Also back are short, bell shaped dressy skirts, often in a floral print (remember our season's first trend), which are sure to be popular at all those Proms this spring.

Each time the 80s comes around, they get better, don't they. Hmmm, which fashion decade will repeat next?

Everything's coming up roses - the color, that is.

Last fall and winter the top color was wine, but with spring, along with our longer day-light hours, we're finding that the shade is lightening up, too. Now, the top color is wine's much less intense cousin, rose. For those wine-lovers out there, it's sort of like the fall/winter season was a fine Merlot and now spring is a Rosé.

This lighter, muted trend is evident with other colors, too:  for instance, we're seeing a dark salmon instead of a bright coral. But by the time summer comes, have no fear that these colors will in turn brighten up, from a Blush Rosé  to a fruity White Zinfandel.

The one style trend you can't go wrong with this spring: Florals.

Flowers are back in a big way this spring. And we don't mean a hint or a peek of floral. No. No shrinking violets here. In fact, we're seeing that too much is not enough when it comes to florals. That's right -- head to toe, back to front, top to bottom ... don't worry that it's too much, because it isn't.

And the good news is that it doesn't seem that shades matter. You can wear bright or muted -- or, heck, even bright and muted -- and be sure of a fashion-forward look.

But if you want to really take your style to the next level, how about this trend:  Be bold and accent your florals with a pattern such as a stripe. Imagine navy with a white stripe paired with a bright colored floral. Which is the scarf and which is the clothing, it doesn't really matter. We know you'll be a knockout.
